Why Civilisation Is Doomed

I came across this list of 10,000 reasons civilisation is doomed. It seems to be an open list of all the reasons people think civilization (as we know it) is on the rocks. Among the contenders:

  • Overpopulation - over time, larger population v non-renewable resources. Seems like a no-brainer, but no-one’s stepping in on this issue. Why not?
  • Capitilism - because profit isn’t the purpose of life. Everybody trying to make a quick buck at the expense of everybody else - amateur property developers, suing your friends and neighbours, etc.
  • Avarice in the hearts of apathetic consumers who feast on fried fat, luxury cars, and infinite unnecessary gadgets when millions die annually from malnutrition, murder, and disease. How can one purchase thirty pairs of shoes, $100 meals, and diamond rings when so many suffer from a want of basic necessities?
  • Rape is not punishable by castration.

Anyway, my contender for the list is that people (as a group) are just too stupid. Human beings are dumb. Let me cite Northern Ireland to you as an example of how a group of people can endure years of bitter conflict and continue to vote for the idiots who caused the problem in the first place. At the expense of parties who just might help to create employment and opportunities for their doomed-to-be-idiot offspring.

  1. :-)

    True…

    We’re all doomed…..

  2. Christ Levee, you’re depressing.

Maybe the impending eco-catastophe will force people to become less selfish and more environmentally aware?

Maybe we’ll see a sharp turn-away from globalisation back to small-ccale economics and self-sufficiency? Maybe people will reject the car as the oil reserves dwindle, and become less obese and bone-idle?

  3. The list of, (10,000 reasons civilisation is doomed), warrants no further comment. We all have our off-days but building a blog on the subject is something else. Mr Levee’s contention that, “People are just too stupid. Human beings are dumb” must be viewed in the Norn Iron context, where instead of electing the best candidates people vote along traditional tribal lines. Therefore the continum remains as it was - the status quo guarentees the percieved safety of the political parish set-up.

Until the old mindsets alter significantly nothing can be done to improve the lifestyle of the electorate. Of course, there are many in the currant bunch of elected incompidents who remain incapible of change. They percieve our divided histories as their method of maintaining the established order. If the electorate keep doing what they have always done they will keep getting what they have always got - sectarian bigots masquarading in the cloak of respectibility under the banner of politics.

Change can happen but if it does it will be slow. It will be painful to the tribal masters, our so-called leaders, but when it happens we could genuinely built a common future. Its not too late to come out and smell the rose’s.
