An Anniversary

Holy crap, how time flies! Looking down on the archives list today, I discovered that I’ve been blogging at The Levee Breaks for just over two years!

In that time, there have been some big changes in my life, which were well recorded here. I had a keen interest in Northern Irish politics for a long while, which attracted many readers here at one point. My job turned to - and continues to be - shit. Other Northern Irish blogs have come and gone in that time, some missed more than others.

It’s all been recorded here at one point or another.

Funny, as 2006 draws to a close, my depressive episode seems to be lifting. Maybe it’s the impending New Year, causing me to reassess life. I’m sure I’ve lost control of my goals at some point. A lot of this year has been spent wondering what the hell I’m doing with my life and trying to find meaning in existence. I know that sounds painfully angsty, but there you go!

The thing is, The Levee Breaks 2006 has reflected that - sporadic posting, jumping from topic to topic, all signs of an unsettled mind. 2007 is the year for action. But we’ll talk about that later ;)

  1. Excellent news Mr. Levee. Two years is quite an achievment in the Blogsphere. Wel Done and Congratulations.

  2. Parnell - how long’s it been for you now? I’d have thought roughly the same…

  3. Happy Anniversary and I hope that 2007 will bring you the answers you want :0)

  4. All the best for the year of action and HAPPY CHRISTMAS too :-)

  5. Mr. Levee: No you are much older, and probably a lot wiser than Parnell. Parnell entered the big brave blogsphere by invitation of my fellow Blogger, El Matador. in September 2005. After eight happy months on El Blogador posting was suspended until August this year when, Ireland - The Voice Of The Nation, entered the Blogspher in its on right. The Levee Breaks, deservably has found its own niche and remains my daily read. How about a little more often! Finally; I wish you, Mrs Levee and the three little cuties all the very best of Christmas Cheer and Goodwill and look forward to reading youe excellent Blog for a god few more years yet>

  6. Oops, What happened there with that link. I didn’t do it - It was like that when I posted it - Its not my fault - I didn’t break it.

  7. Congrats Levee!
Any interest in creating cast stone fireplace surrounds and that sort or thing there?
Could you get a government sponsored loan to start such a venture?
I’ve no business sense at manufacturing (only construction and clientele relations), but I’ve got quite an education about architectural elements and archaeology.
Want to team up on an international venture?

  8. Guys, thanks for the good wishes, and all the best to you for the New Year!

CyberScribe - it’ll be a big year, I’m certain of that!

Andrew - funny, my father was offered a fireplace business years and years ago, but he turned it down. He was the greatest chimney sweep in Ballycastle in his day though!

Making fireplaces sounds like seriously hard labour!

  9. Well labour is only one facet of the business. I presumed that you left a position more in the management area and was not looking for skilled labour. No offense to labour, but it is harder to find qualified managers and salespeople. It shouldn’t be hard to find labour there that would be interested in advancing into a trade that is now using computer numerically controlled (CNC milling) machining to make mould models. That kind of skill can branch off in a multitude of directions, and would be an estimable factor in considering working for a less established company.

There is a fireplace surround company in Carrickfergus that supply stone fireplace surrounds, and I’m certain they are using CNC machinery to “carve” their pieces. If they are not, I bet they soon will be. Making cast stone instead makes having a fireplace surround more affordable than stone and anticipates more of a D-I-Y home renovator’s market. It is also possible to do things with casting that one cannot carve in stone.

As a manufacturer I wouldn’t have any involvement in installation beyond consultation. Masonry contractors would be calling for advice or particulars about the product. I am hoping to lift no more than a pen and a briefcase in my next venture.
As I get older I expect to work smarter, not harder. How about you?

  10. Happy New Year Mr. Levee, May you an yours continue to thrive an prosper with continued health, ( Sore Mickey’s aside), All the way trough an beyond 2007.

  11. …some websites more missed than others. :)

I shall, self effacingly, take a bow, Mr L.

Our very good wishes for 2007.
